Study in Canada: Regular Study Permit vs. Student Direct Stream (SDS)
Canada is an ideal destination for international students, offering world-class education and a welcoming environment. Depending on your country of residence, you can apply for a study permit through either the Regular Study Permit process or the faster Student Direct Stream (SDS).
Regular Study Permit
For students from any country planning to study in Canada for more than six months, the Regular Study Permit requires:
  • An acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (DLI)
  • Proof of financial support
  • Documentation showing your intent to leave Canada after studies
  • Additional documents as required by your visa office
  • Have a provincial or territorial attestation letter

Student Direct Stream (SDS)

The SDS offers expedited processing for legal residents of specific countries, including:
  • Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Vietnam
To qualify for the SDS, you must meet the following requirements:
  • Residency: Be a legal resident in one of the eligible countries
  • Acceptance Letter: Have an acceptance letter from a Canadian post-secondary DLI
  • Tuition Payment: Provide proof of full payment of tuition for your first year of study
  • Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC): Obtain a GIC of at least CAD $10,000 from a participating financial institution
  • Language Proficiency: Provide language test results showing a minimum score of 6.0 in each skill on the IELTS, or an equivalent score in a recognized French language test
  • Educational Documents: Submit your most recent secondary or post-secondary school transcripts
  • Medical Exam and Police Certificate: Complete a medical exam and provide a police certificate if required
  • Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter: Have a provincial or territorial attestation letter
  • Application Location: Apply from outside Canada
